It is 1936 and harvest time in county Donegal. In a house outside the village of Ballybeg, live the five Mundy sisters, barely making ends meet, their ages ranging from twenty six up to forty. The two male members of the household are their brother Jack, a missionary priest recently repatriated from Africa by his superiors after twenty five years and Michael, the seven year old son of the youngest sister. It is through the eyes of Michael as an adult that we see two days in the life of this family, two days which see the arrival of Michael's father, Gerry, and changes which will affect the family forever.
