Magic moments in 'Oz'

| 'Did we go to the same show?'
From A. Margaret Starr, Gloucester Street, Faringdon A THEATRE review in a daily paper is written so that readers can judge whether they will attend or not. A review written about an amateur production for a local paper does not have this function. To decide whether to go or not, we mostly rely on our friends. My friends' universal reaction to 'The Wizard of Oz, was "It's brilliant!", and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I read your review to stir happy memories and see which bits you had particularly enjoyed. Your enthusiasm was so muted, I wondered if we had attended the same production. What a pity! ---------------------------- I AM pleased that you and your friends enjoyed 'The Wizard of oz' so much. Within the limitations mentioned in the review, I enjoyed it too. But I have too much respect for the Faringdon Community Theatre to think that they would want me to be less than honest when invited to attend one of their shows. In the past, I have dished out unstinted praise for many of their
productions to the extent where some cast members have actually expressed embarrassment, and where some other local drama groups have wondered whether I harbour favouritism for Faringdon. I venture to suggest that even some members of the cast had reservations about this production, and would not mark it down as one of their best. it was competent beyond the skills of many other groups, but in my opinion lacked a sparkle, an energy and innovation that we have come to expect of this particular group of thespians. -Ed.. |
