‘Our Town’ by the American playwright, Thornton Wilder, is one of his two Pulitzer Prize winning plays. It is both an affectionate portrait of life in small town America and an attempt to put a value on the little events in daily life – the experiences which are common to so many of us. The action follows the lives of some of the inhabitants of the town over a period of thirteen years, as people grow up, marry and pass on.
Wilder felt strongly that theatre was limited by the constraints of the typical boxed set and has deliberately pared the set and props to the minimum, relying on the actors to create the atmosphere and to convey the relationships and emotions. He has therefore presented a real challenge to the actors.
