Leonard Vole is accused of murdering Miss Emily French, a wealthy maiden lady with whom he has become friendly. Although there is considerable circumstantial evidence against him, his easy nature and ready honesty convince his defence team that he is innocent and they are hopeful that they can secure an acquittal. However, all of this confidence is dashed to pieces when Vole’s wife amazingly takes the stand to give evidence for the prosecution. Her statement appears damming and Vole believes that he is now to be hanged – unless new evidence can be found to support his case.
